Ventura Jacint

Collaborator in the small mammal research area

Degree in Biology from the Universitat de Barcelona (UB) in 1981. He joined the Department of Zoology at the UB in 1983 as a fellow of the Plan de Formación de Personal Investigador (FPI) of the Spanish Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia. As such, he joined the research group on small mammals, led by Dr. Joaquim Gosálbez Noguera. His PhD thesis (1988) deals with several aspects of the biology of two species of water voles (genus Arvicola).

Between 1987 and 1991 he was assistant in the Department of Morphological Sciences and Odontostomatology of the Faculty of Medicine of the UB, and between 1991 and 1997 assistant and associate professor in the Department of Zoology of this university. In 1998 he won a position as full professor in the Department of Animal Biology, Plant Biology and Ecology of the Faculty of Biology (currently Biosciences) of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, and in 2011 he obtained the chair of Zoology. Since 2020, the year of his retirement, he is a collaborator of the small mammal research area of the MCNG.

His research work includes, among other activities, participation in more than thirty competitive research projects on rodents, soricomorphs or marsupials, work stays in various research centers and the supervision of ten doctoral theses. These activities have resulted in more than one hundred and fifty publications (about a hundred in journals with SCI) on reproduction, postnatal ontogeny, anatomy, taxonomy, evolutionary morphology, biogeography or chromosomal speciation.
