Amat Orriols Fèlix

Scientific Coordinator of the Herpetology Group - famat@mcng.cat

Fèlix Amat Orriols is a professional adviser and conservation biologist focusing its activity on amphibians and reptiles. He started very soon to be interested in these organisms and taught himself as a naturalist and photographer. He is a biologist from the University of Barcelona and completed his undergraduate experience investigating the biology of Sand lizards in the Pyrenees.

He joined the Natural Science Museum of Granollers in 2005 and combinated its practice as field herpetologist and conservationist with the management of the collection of the museum. He uses amphibians as a bioindicator for environmental change in the Natural Park and Biosphere Reserve of Montseny studying the spatial distribution of the reproductive communities. Particularly, he studies the fenology, reproductive biometry, habitat use and geographic distribution of reproductive areas of Brown frogs because the Montseny massif is the southwesternmost edge of species range. It makes this species very sensitive to climate and habitat changes.

He also developed a small and semiprofessional activity as researcher, receiving funding from the Bin Zayed Foundation, the Barcelona's Zoo Foundation and the Department of Research and Environment of ENDESA. Its research activity comprises genomics, population genetics and phylogeny, ecology and demographics, and evolution using amphibians and reptiles as model organisms.
